Season 5 is already going off the rails

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Love is blind Season 5, Episodes 5-7.

Love is blindThe couple’s most confusing love triangle ended in a breakup.

Season 5’s Uche and Aaliyah seemed instantly attracted to each other during the first four episodes of the dating series, which debuted on Netflix last Friday. But then he made a shocking revelation: he had dated another of the women before, and she happened to be Aaliyah’s best friend on the show, Lydia. As viewers found out this week, the confusing and emotional fallout was too much for the couple to bear. In Episode 5, which debuted on Friday along with Episodes 6 and 7, Uche and Aaliyah appeared to say their final goodbyes.

Love is blind Creator Chris Koelen recently said diversity that the show had no idea about Uche and Lydia’s past, but added that producers forbade the couple from mentioning it to anyone straight away. They were allowed to stay, he said, “if they didn’t tell people their story right away.” And at that point, on the first day of the pods, we all felt that the information wasn’t relevant, and we all agreed “That disclosing this information would have impacted everyone’s overall experience.”

It’s hard not to wonder what could have happened between these two if they had been allowed to communicate freely. Then again, Uche was also kind of a jerk to Aaliyah when she shared a shameful moment from her past (cheating on a partner two years ago), so maybe all is well, all is well. Ultimately, Aaliyah said she believes her choice was the right one — and that’s really what matters.

Although the love quadrangle of Uche, Aaliyah, Lydia, and Milton takes up quite a bit of space in this week’s episodes, it’s not the only place of emotional chaos. There’s also Izzy and Stacy, who clash over money and his extreme bachelor behavior. (He’s a grown man with a closet full of paper plates and Solo cups, and she, meanwhile, wants to know if he’s willing to share the cost of a new HVAC system, but is reluctant to do so at any point to go to the Netherlands. ) Lydia and Milton seem to get along pretty well, although he has found that she can be a bit “bossy” – so she wants to dictate the color of his shorts.

The biggest casualty this week would be JP and Taylor, who seemed like a done deal in the pods but acted awkward the moment they saw each other in person. This week they mostly seem to be sulking in each other’s presence while JP flaunts as much patriotic gear as possible. (I counted a pair of flag-printed trunks, another flag on his button-down shirt, and a tank top that said “USA”). Eventually, Taylor pressed JP enough about his silence to find out why he had been acting so uncomfortable around her – and boy, was he a jerk.

Film still from season 5 of Love is Blind.

“I understand that you were trying to present yourself and look your best, but I feel like if you had presented yourself like that, without makeup, it would have been better,” JP says to his fiancée – the she can barely contain disbelief. “So the way I looked made you communicate differently?”

As JP tells Taylor, “It felt like you were fake.” He later complains that her “crusty face” stained his whole jacket. As for him, he said, “That’s not a real person.” The morning after, as expected, the two split up – because how do you come back from that?

That leaves us with just two surviving couples who will be in next week’s episodes: Stacy and Izzy and Lydia and Milton. Both couples face some difficulties.

Stacy and Izzy seem solid for the most part – at least they seem to enjoy gossiping about Izzy’s ex Johnie at a cast meeting in Episode 7 – but the money issue seems to be a big one. Stacy’s father seems to be hinting at something when he tells Izzy, “The whole thing Love is blind Thing, I understand that, but love has to eat too. Love needs a roof. Sometimes love wants to fly first class.” And that’s what it did not seems to like his “lost and found” basket full of jewelry and trinkets left behind by random women he no longer remembers. With this in mind, it will be a steep road for both of them; For now, let’s just hope the air conditioning holds up.

Lydia and Milton could be the biggest wild cards of the season. She’s a 30-year-old geologist and he’s a 24-year-old engineer who’s also banned from playing Pokemon Showdown in five different countries because he talks “too much shit.” He doesn’t seem keen on Lydia’s story with Uche, especially when Uche shows up at the cast reunion mixer in episode 7. Meanwhile, Lydia can’t stand being near Uche; Within minutes, she starts screaming and saying he has a narcissistic personality while showing her screenshots that he says suggest she was spying on people he followed on Instagram during their relationship.

As we see in next week’s preview, Uche is convinced Lydia planned for them to be there at the same time. When Aaliyah and Uche broke up, she also told Uche that she was worried that he and Lydia were planning to appear on the show together. Clearly our biggest entanglement yet isn’t going to get any easier any time soon.
