Republican Sens. Steve Daines of Montana and Tom Cotton of Arkansas are calling on President Joe Biden to pull the US out of the World Health Organization.
“We urge you not only to accept your government’s proposed changes to the International Health Regulations (IHR) by the 18 President posted by Fox News.
“WHO has demonstrated an abject lack of competence throughout the COVID-19 pandemic that has destroyed the organization’s credibility and undermined public trust in it,” they said. “WHO has handled the pandemic poorly, failed to bring public health information to the world, and willingly promoted misinformation that helped communist China cover up its responsibility for a global pandemic.”
According to the WHO, the WHO is an organization of the United Nations website.
Many conservatives would likely support the idea of a US withdrawal from the WHO, but it seems highly unlikely that the Biden administration would ever take such a step.
While the Trump administration planned to pull America out of the WHO in 2021, the Biden administration reversed course.
“This letter constitutes a retraction of the letter dated July 6, 2020, by the United States government notifying you that the United States government intends to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) effective July 6, 2021 The United States intends to remain a member of the World Health Organization,” Biden noted in a Letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres.
“WHO plays a critical role in the global fight against the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, as well as myriad other threats to global health and health security. The United States will continue to be a full participant and a global leader in countering such threats and promoting global health and health security,” Biden’s letter said.
