Seth Rogen says 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie is worst ever

“I was so disappointed,” the Super Mario Bros. Movie actor said of the 1993 live-action film. “I think it made me realize that movies can be bad.”

Seth Rogen hits the banana in the 1993 live-action series Super Mario Bros.

Rogen, who voices Donkey Kong in the new animated film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, has revealed his personal connection to the Nintendo franchise and how “disappointed” he was with the feature film starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi.

“When I was 11, I saw the original ‘Mario Bros.’ movie and I was so excited. But it’s one of the worst movies ever made,” Rogen told Variety. “I was so disappointed. I think it made me realize that movies can be bad. It never crossed my mind until this moment.”

Rogen added: “It really blew my mind. It’s nice to confirm this moment. It’s nice to know that 11-year-olds out there… won’t be as disappointed as I was.”

Rogen stars alongside Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Jack Black and Anya Taylor-Joy.

“It’s nice because when you’re playing a voice you can just focus on making jokes that maybe kids will laugh at,” Rogen continued of the animated comedy.

Original Super Mario Bros. actor Leguizamo told IndieWire in November 2022 that he was “not bitter” about the remake.

“I’m OG A lot of people love the original. I’ve been to Comic-Con in New York and in Baltimore and everyone was like, ‘No, no, we love the old, the original.’ You don’t feel the new one,” said Leguizamo. “It’s unfortunate.”

Leguizamo recalled that playing against Luigi was a big deal back then.

“Directors Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton fought really hard to get me to do the lead because I’m Latino and they are [the studio] didn’t want me to play the lead,” he said. “They fought really hard and it was such a breakthrough. So that they go backwards and don’t throw anyone else [actor of color] kinda sucks.”

Illumination Studios’ producer and founder and CEO, Chris Meledandri, has for the past year quashed any doubts about Pratt, the lead actor of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” and his lack of Italian ancestry.

“We are working with Chris and his experienced team to create not just a character-licensed film, but a new piece of entertainment, the ‘Super Mario Bros.’ brought to life on screen and allows everyone to enjoy it, whether they know the game or not,” said Meledandri during the CineEurope convention. “When people hear Chris Pratt perform, the criticism evaporates, maybe not entirely — people love speaking their minds like they should.”

Meledandri continued, “I’m not sure if that’s the smartest defense, but as a person of Italian-American heritage, I feel like I can make that decision without worrying about being Italian or Italian-American.” offend…I think we’re going to just be good.”
