She-Hulk Finale Director: There have been “talks” about MCU slams

The following contains spoilers from the She Hulk final.

Marvel’s image-conscious overlords had minimal notes on the subject She-Hulk: Lawyer Season finale that franchise boss Kevin Feige envisioned as an AI-controlled robot called KEVIN (Knowledge Enhanced Visual Interconnectivity Nexus) and named some of the MCU’s lazier storytelling devices.

Kat Coiro, who directed Episodes 1-4 and 8-9, told TVLine Friday morning that there had been “conversations” as the mega meta finale script developed.

“Marvel is less of a ‘notes’ place and more of a ‘conversation,'” she explained, “and a lot of those conversations have to do with where the franchises are going and what the future is.”

She-Hulk Finale SkaarFor example, when Hulk (played by Mark Ruffalo) reappeared at the end to introduce the Walters family to his son (played by Wil Deusner aka DC’s Stargirl‘s Joey Zarick), “I had the idea that I wanted Skaar to be a toddler, kind of like Baby Yoda,” Coiro said, “but I don’t think the story goes there.”

When it came to Jen Walters (played by Tatiana Maslany) confronting KEVIN about the MCU’s over-reliance on flashy end battles (as well as “daddy issues” for their heroes), Coirio says, “Hilariously, I was more nervous about that, Marvel throwing it under the bus when Kevin and the Big Brass were at Marvel. They were incredibly self-deprecating and incredibly willing to make fun of themselves.”

She Hulk finale KEVINCoiro says Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige (the human) “had one gigantic Hand in the finale” and its “fourth wall-breaking” elements, including She-Hulk fleeing the “mess” of a CGI clash between Hulk, Abomination, Titania and Hulk Todd, climbing around the Disney+ menu screen and then across the screen strolled (actually) Disney has a lot to complain about the writers of the TV series. She-Hulk/Jen then confronted the aforementioned KEVIN at the (actual) Marvel offices, requesting a number of changes to the finale.

Feige “definitely always wanted to make sure there was a separation between the real Kevin Feige and the KEVIN,” says Coiro. But after a bit of negotiation, “er did let’s put the little ‘baseball cap’ on the robot’, as Feige is known to wear herself, ‘so that was good.’
