Six dead after dust storm causes crashes on Interstate 55 in Illinois
At least six people were killed and more than 30 people were injured in accidents caused by “excessive winds” that blew dust onto Interstate 55 in Farmersville, Illinois Monday morning, causing “blindness” conditions, the authorities said Illinois State Police.
The accidents, which occurred just before 11 a.m. in a rural area south of Springfield, involved about 20 commercial vehicles and between 40 and 60 cars, including two tractor-trailers, which caught fire, police said in a statement.
The freeway, a major artery in the area, remained closed in both directions between Milestone 63 and Milestone 80, and motorists were urged to seek alternative routes.
This is an evolving story.
