St. Petersburg man arrested in connection with fatal hit-and-run motorcycle

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — A man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run motorcycle accident, St. Petersburg police said.

According to a statement from the St. Petersburg police, the accident happened on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on 22nd Avenue South at 45th St. South.

Investigators said Jonathan Hughes, 57, was traveling west on a Honda motorcycle when an eastbound Jeep Cherokee pulled into his path. The motorcycle collided with the SUV, killing Hughes. The jeep left the scene of the accident, police said.

Police said they located the Jeep involved in the crash Monday night. The driver, identified as Jakil Powell, 20, turned himself in to police around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Powell was charged with leaving the scene of the accident, which resulted in fatalities. The investigations are ongoing.
