KAMPALA, UGANDA — A stampede during New Year celebrations at a popular shopping mall in Uganda’s capital Kampala killed at least nine people, including children, police said on Sunday.
The rush happened at the Freedom City Mall in suburban Namasuba as revelers rushed to watch the fireworks.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire said the incident appeared to have happened around midnight “when a moderator at the event encouraged attendees to go outside and watch fireworks”.
Katwe Territorial Police are investigating “an incident of rash (conduct) and neglect,” according to an official statement.
So far there have been no arrests.
Police said five people died at the scene and four others died from their injuries at the hospital where they were taken for treatment. There was initially no information about other injuries.
Police said the bodies were taken to the municipal morgue in Mulago.
The mall is a popular place for music concerts and New Year celebrations.
