‘Stargirl’ Recap Season 3 Episode 12: Starman Twist for the Series Finale

DC’s Stargirl dropped quite a bombshell en route to the series finale, which airs next week.

The title of the series’ penultimate hour, “The Last Will and Testament of Sylvester Pemberton,” seemed quite ominous and certainly caused fans to fret over Starman’s fate as he set out to single-handedly take on the Risen Icicle.

What we didn’t know was that Sylvester himself never fully came back from the dead. Yes, his attachment to the cosmic staff did to preserve his physical form, but the brain inside him belongs to the mad scientist called Ultra-Humanite (who had previously called home actress Dolores Winters and then a powerful albino gorilla).

Viewers were stunned by this chilling realization when Cindy, Mike and Jakeem used Thunderbolt to be transported to one of the Dragon King’s hidden laboratories. There, the budding Young All-Stars team discovered the body of the Dragon King with the skull cut open – after which the aforementioned albino gorilla came around a corner to confront them, revealing himself to be actually Cindy’s father.

Stargirl 3x12 Ultra HumaniteSylvester, meanwhile, made it clear to everyone his alleged intention to find and kill Jordan Mahkent and did his best to disparage Pat/Stripesy from joining the fight. An overhearing Courtney, in turn, shouted out to Sylvester, saying that she now saw that idolizing her once-supposed father was wrong, claiming that “sidekick” Pat was a hero – and a damn good father to her.

Later, when Sylvester encountered a stubborn Pat at the Mahkent house, it appeared he would let his former sidekick join the mission, only to later defeat him with the Cosmic Staff’s business ending. Sylvester then dragged Pat away and dug a grave for him, revealing along the way that it was now actually the vessel for Ultra-Humanite’s brain.

While Ultra-Humanite proudly recounted his journey as Sylvester/Starman, flashbacks to his Season 1 finale and his Season 2 appearances underscored how he had spoken to people in Pat’s life to prepare for this “role” and how he had taken steps to apply for this “role” to “power down” the other JSA members (by shoving Rick to OD on the hourglass, making Beth pop out her people, etc.).

Heading into next week’s finale, the final moments of the episode showed Pat getting almost to the essence of Sylvester, who seemingly still resided within the OG JSA member’s body. But Ultra-Humanite refused the attempt and continued to bury Pat alive…

So there you have your setup for the series finale. Ultra-Humanite (in Starman’s body) is allied with Icicle and Dragon King (as an albino gorilla). Pat is buried. Rick is bad. STRIP is damaged. And Courtney doesn’t even have the cosmic wand.

What do you think of Season 3 Episode 12? As much as the Ultra-Humanite reveals leads with Sylvester’s occasionally odd behavior, has it made you open your own lid? And do you feel particularly bad for those he cheated along the way?

And isn’t Pat necessarily down for the count? After all, what was the plan he started making with Zeek at the pit stop…?
