“I didn’t mention the fact that we had already worked together and he cut me out of his film,” Harbor said.
Steven Spielberg has directed 32 films and counting, but he can’t keep track of all the actors he’s worked with.
Stranger Things star David Harbor revealed that Spielberg forgot he was in the 2005 film War of the Worlds. While Harbor’s scene was eventually cut from the finished film, he was credited with production as a “dock worker,” he told Yahoo!. The scene involved Harbor and lead actor Tom Cruise together at a bar.
“I don’t know if you remember the movie, but [Cruise’s character] works nights and he comes home from work at the dock and he leaves and he’s late to pick up his kid. And that’s where the mom gets really mad at him because he’s a dead dad,” Harbor explained. “Well, in the original script there was a scene where the reason he’s late is because he’s having a drink with his buddy at the bar after his shift at around 8am. And his buddy at the bar was me. And we had a little scene in this bar and it wasn’t a great scene. Also, it wasn’t a necessary scene for the movie at all… And we shot it and I remember thinking it was probably going to be cut, but Spielberg was there and it was so exciting to meet him. He cast me. And then, you know, it just got cut, just never made it into the movie.”
Harbor continued: “It’s devastating. It’s devastating and awful. But it was kind of awesome because years later Spielberg was producing Revolutionary Road and he came up to me at another table and he was reading something else and he was just like, ‘Oh David, I just want to say that I saw you in Revolutionary Road ” Really love.” I just think you’re great. We are so happy. I would really like to work with you one day.’ And I didn’t mention the fact that we had already worked together and he cut me out of his film.”
Harbour’s role on Revolutionary Road also caught the attention of another A-lister, Madonna.
“I got a call from a casting director I knew very well saying they are putting together a top secret screening of the film, but all you have to do is show up at the St. Regis and enter this room and everything will be revealed. And I was like, ‘This is really weird and creepy,'” Harbor mused. “‘You have a sex scene in it and they thought you were sexy.’ And so, all weekend, literally, I’ve been thinking about Ridley Scott and Martin Scorsese. I show up at the St. Regis and walk into the room and there are a few other New York actors and Madonna who is directing this film walking around. The first thing that flooded me was, ‘Wow, Madonna thinks I’m sexy.'”
