The question that looms over the first half of stranger things fourth season is who exactly Vecna is and why the monster is terrorizing the town of Hawkins.

As the series progresses, Vecna begins his reign of terror, targeting individuals who have a deep, dark secret they don’t want to share with anyone, and he uses horrifying visions to twist the truth and cause them pain.

Vecna then transports his victims to their own makeshift hell, where they are tormented by their inner demons as he hunts them down, though in reality the terrifying experience is only in their minds because the creature put them in a trance.

Once the monster captures her, which it inevitably does, Vecna kills her inside out by taking her soul, while in the real world her body is shattered at horrific angles and her eyes gouged out.

At first it’s not obvious why Vecna chooses his victims, but that soon becomes clearer as viewers learn of his origins and motivations.

It turns out that Vecna has a more familiar origin story than fans would initially expect, and that’s due to his connection to Eleven.

You see Vecna was actually once human and had special powers just like Eleven, in fact he is One (played by Jamie Campbell Bower), the first of Dr. Martin Brenner’s (Matthew Modine) test subjects.

Just like Eleven, he has psychokinetic and telepathic abilities that allow him to manipulate those around him, and he can also see into his victims’ minds and dig up their darkest secrets.

In the show’s finale, Vecna’s past is revealed in two ways – through a memory of a conversation he had with Eleven and when he targets Nancy Byers (Natalia Dyer), with whom he shares his story in flashbacks while she’s in trance is.

Vecna haunts the home of Victor Creel (Robert Englund) because he was never a ghost to haunt the family, he is actually Victor’s son.

In Eleven’s memory, she learns that as a child, One viewed people as “pests” and he loathed the idea of living a “normal” life and following the order and mundaneness of everyday life, such as having children, going to work, and dying.

become a predator

Vecna needed more than that, so he began testing his abilities further to become a predator “forever,” like with his beloved Black Widow spiders. He grew stronger and stronger as he tormented animals of various kinds.

When his parents began to suspect something was wrong with their son, they made plans to get him to see a doctor, except that One refused to be put in a psychiatric hospital and instead killed his mother and sister and tried to doing the same with his father, but fainted from overexertion.

It was Victor who was arrested and found guilty of the murders and shortly thereafter One was arrested by Dr. Arrested Brenner who tried to control him.

When that didn’t work, he stuck a chip down One’s throat to prevent him from using his powers and started a program to make other kids like him, like Eleven, and only when Eleven removes this can he unleash his anger once more.

The massacre shown at the very beginning of the season was not carried out by Eleven but by One, who killed all of the children and workers at the facility.

Instead of joining One in his attempt to destroy humanity, Eleven faces him and uses her powers to push him into the Upside Down, creating the first portal to the alternate dimension.

Then, falling through the Upside Down, One became the creature Vecna after being struck by lightning in such a way that it changed his skin and turned him into the monster he is now.
