Strikes to destroy supplies say 102 Russians are killed, Ukrainian forces say

Ukrainian military say they killed 102 Russian soldiers and destroyed six tanks and other weapons as Ukrainian forces press ahead with a counteroffensive in the country’s southern region.

Ukraine’s Operational Command South (OCS) reported the success in a Facebook post on Thursday, saying it had conducted successful strikes on several Russian targets. The post comes as Ukraine made its first significant effort to retake Russian-held territories near the southern city of Kherson.

“Destruction of enemy supplies and reserves, impact on checkpoints and fire control of transport routes continue,” the command, a formation of Ukrainian ground forces in southern Ukraine, said in the Post.

The command post said its aviation conducted attacks on Russian targets, including command and support points, as well as fuel, logistics and transport infrastructure.

In addition to the Russian soldiers killed, the day’s fighting ended with six tanks destroyed, as well as a MLRS “Grad” rocket launcher, an Msta-B howitzer and a mobile 120mm mortar, according to the command, which added this saw no casualties at the hands of Russians missile attacks.

“The enemy is attempting to hold defenses ashore and continues artillery, mortar, air and missile attacks on our positions, on civilian settlements and on local residents,” the post reads.

In addition, according to the command, Ukrainian forces destroyed five ammunition dumps near Kherson and other areas.

Armed with weaponry from Western allies, notably High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), the Ukrainian military has stepped up its campaign to retake Kherson, the first major city to fall since the Russian invasion.

The Ukrainian military has kept a low profile on information about the offensive, but officials have been quick to tout their achievements.

The Ukrainian military said earlier Thursday they destroyed a pontoon bridge built by Russian troops in the occupied village of Darivka in the Kherson region. The bridge and others nearby were attacked by Ukrainian forces in an attempt to cut off Russian supply routes.

Russian troops destroyed a platoon of US-made M777 howitzers near Andreyevka in the Kherson region, a spokesman for the country’s defense ministry told Russian state news agency TASS on Thursday.

The news agency also quoted Defense Ministry spokesman Lt. Gen. Igor Konashenkovl as saying Russian air forces had shot down eight Ukrainian drones, one Tochka-U ballistic missile and over 40 HIMARS in addition to other missiles in various regions, including Kherson.

“In the last 24 hours alone, the enemy lost 31 tanks, 22 infantry fighting vehicles, 18 other armored fighting vehicles, eight pickups with large-caliber machine guns, 17 special-purpose vehicles and over 350 people in combat operations in this area,” Konashenkovl said.

news week asked the Ukrainian and Russian defense ministries for an opinion.
