Student brought BB gun to Mattapan school, police say

The student is to be summoned to appear in juvenile court for carrying a gun on school property.

A student brought a BB gun to a Mattapan school for kindergarten through eighth grade on Monday, police said, causing the school to go into safe mode.

Officers first received a report of a person with a gun at the Young Achievers Science and Mathematics Pilot School, a K-8 school at 20 Outlook Road, just before 3 p.m., said Officer Andre Watson, a spokesman for the Boston Police Department.

Responding officers then met with security officials and administrators at the school, who said a student brought what they initially believed was a weapon to the school, Watson said. The item, which was in the student’s backpack, was inspected and found to be a BB weapon, Watson said.
