Super Mario RPG Preview – Are Link and Donkey Kong still in the Super Mario RPG remake?

In the ’90s, Nintendo played faster and looser with its character library. Sometimes Yoshi would show up in The Legend of Zelda and Kirby would be whatever color he liked at the time, be it gray or pink. In 1996, this laissez-faire attitude was on full display with the release of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the Super Nintendo. Link, Samus, and even Donkey Kong (sort of) all made unexplained appearances in the game, and one of my big questions about the remake was whether or not these would move forward. If you’re ready to know the answer to at least some of these, read on!
The answer is impressive: yes! At least for Link and Donkey Kong. I haven’t been able to play the game to the point where Samus appears, so I can’t answer that question yet. When you approach Link after seeing him in his sleeping bed, the Speak option will appear, and when you click on it, a Zelda tune will play.

When it comes to Donkey Kong’s cameo, it was always questionable whether it was him or not, since he’s just called “Guerrilla,” but he definitely looks a lot like Donkey Kong, just with a crown.
The Super Mario RPG remake is coming to Nintendo Switch on November 17th.
