LANCASTER, Calif. (KABC)– A man has been barricaded in his Lancaster RV for more than eight hours after leading California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed chase, shooting at officers and pointing a gun at his baby’s head, authorities said.
With the sheriff’s deputies unable to communicate with the suspect, Deputy Miguel Meza contacted the suspect directly on ABC7.
“Fernando, we have crisis negotiators on site. We have deputy staff who want to assist you who want to make sure your baby is safe. Please talk to us. We want to communicate with you. We’ve been trying to communicate for the past six hours,” Meza said.
The situation began Tuesday night when officers spotted a white Kia SUV traveling at a reported speed of 132 mph on Highway 14 near Via Princessa at 11:44 p.m. CHP officers then began pursuing the suspect in a chase that stretched across several freeways.
CHP said the suspect, identified only as Fernando, called the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and told the response team he was armed and had an infant in the car.
“He also said he would shoot at CHP officers if we didn’t break away from the pursuit,” a CHP spokesman said during a news conference Wednesday morning.
The spokesman said at 12:47 a.m. the suspect fired at officers near 17th Street E and Avenue Q in the Palmdale area. No officer was beaten.
The chase ended when the suspect drove to his home in the Lido Estates Mobile Home Community in Lancaster and locked himself there.
“The suspect got out of the vehicle with the infant, had the pistol aimed at the infant’s head and slowly walked away from our officers,” CHP said.
Meanwhile, Alejandra Rosas, the suspect’s aunt, spoke to reporters at the scene and said the child was the suspect’s son.
“I don’t know what happened,” said a tearful Rosas. “He was fine. He laughed and sang for Baby.”
