“Midnights” was released at midnight Eastern Time and was Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day through 6:15 p.m
NEW YORK — Taylor Swift has said that “Midnights” was inspired by certain sleepless nights — something many of her fans no doubt experienced as the singer-songwriter released seven bonus tracks and a music video just hours after the album’s release on Friday.
“Midnights” was, and was, released at, well, midnight Eastern Time Spotify’s most streamed album on a single day at 6:15 p.m. Running at around 44 minutes, listeners would have had the opportunity to play the album four times before Swift released “Midnights (3am Edition)”.
“Surprise! I’m thinking of Midnights as a complete concept album, with these 13 songs forming a complete picture of the intensities of that mysterious, insane hour,” she wrote on Instagram. “However! There were other songs that we wrote on our journey to find that magical 13.”

The bonus tracks sound like the rest the darkly electric and moody album, Start with The Great War, sweep through Paris and explore High Infidelity before ending with Dear Reader. In total, the seven additional songs added to the end of the original “Midnights” track listing add up to approximately 25 additional minutes.
Swift is the only performer credited on the bonus tracks – the only person credited on a “Midnights” track is Lana Del Rey. The additional songs were mainly written by Swift, Jack Antonoff — her “co-pilot” on the album — and Aaron Dessner, a founding member of The National and another frequent Swift contributor who was otherwise absent from “Midnights”.
And five hours after “Midnights (3am Edition)”, Swift treated fans to a muted but lush sound with a visual feast Music video for “Anti Hero”.
Written and directed by Swift himself, reuniting with All Too Well cinematographer Rina Yang, The video shows the Chintzy Sheet Ghosts singer being chased and taking pictures with a glamorous double, who instructs her: “Everyone will betray you.” Dark glitter oozes from the yolk she is cutting into at the breakfast table, her wound from one arrow and her mouth after one too many shots.
“View my nightmare scenarios and intrusive thoughts in real time,” Swift posted on Instagram.
The video contains references to Swifts eating disorder, which she revealed in a documentary, and makes fun of himself with a cutscene that cuts off midway. In it, Mike Birbiglia, John Early and Mary Elizabeth Ellis play her heirs (Preston, Chad and Kimber) who discover that she left them only 13 cents in their will (Swift’s favorite number is known to be 13).
“There’s probably a secret encrypted message that means something else!” Early exclamations in character referencing the field of cryptology Swift has created over the years.
“PS There is no secret encrypted message that means anything else. Love, Taylor,” Birbiglia reads seconds later.
The “Anti-Hero” video garnered more than 9,700,000 views in the first 13 hours (apt) of its release and spawned the #TSAntiHeroChallenge. Swift encourages people to upload a video to YouTube Shorts where they share the traits that would make them an antihero. according to a blog post on youtube, The challenge is to “acknowledge and celebrate the traits that make each of us truly unique and to showcase our true selves in a fun way.”
“An antihero trait could be as simple as always grabbing the last piece of pizza, clapping at the end of movies, always putting your feet on the car dashboard, using the same word to start your daily wordle, yours leaving clean clothes in the basket until the next time you do it, pretending you haven’t already seen the next episode of the series, watching with your friends, or even treating your cat like a human.” it in the post. Swift chose the last for their own template.
While the challenge brings ease to the release cycle, Swift is clear about the tone she is aiming for with the album and related projects.
“Midnights is a collage of intensity, highs and lows and ebbs and flows,” Swift posted on Instagram when the original album was released. “Life can be dark, starry, cloudy, terrifying, electric, hot, cold, romantic or lonely. Just like Midnights.”
