Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas is facing backlash after blasting California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom over his state’s power problems.

Fears that California’s power grid could hit a breaking point have increased recently due to the high electricity demands of those hoping to cool off amid an extreme heatwave. Cruz, during an appearance on Fox News Wednesday night Prime Time by Jesse Watters, Newsom taunted for wearing a fleece jacket in a video urging Californians to conserve electricity and avoid blackouts by keeping air conditioners at 78 degrees or higher. Cruz also targeted US climate chief John Kerry for “teaching people” about climate change.

“I love that Gavin Newsom wore his fleece, obviously in a cool air conditioner,” Cruz said said. “To say, ‘Let them eat cake, let them sweat — you don’t get air conditioning!’ It’s like John Kerry flying his private jet all over the planet and lecturing people that you poor dirty working class with dirt under your fingernails: you have to give up a car, you have to turn off your air conditioning, just stay home and worms meal.”

Cruz’s comments were poorly received by many on Twitter, with several people pointing to the senator’s controversial 2021 family vacation in Cancun, Mexico while his home state faced an energy crisis during an unprecedented winter storm.

“I’m old enough to remember when Cruz fled Texas for Cancun during a deadly freeze,” said sportswriter Michael Schwab tweeted.

“Attn Senator Cancun Wheelie Bag @tedcruz @SenTedCruz”, tweeted Writer Tara Dublin, alongside a video of Cruz rolling a bag through an airport at the time of his trip to Cancun.

“Said the man who fled to Cancun when his state’s separatist web collapsed,” said cyber security specialist Amit Serper tweeted. “Ted Cruz is such a loser.”

“Ooh, someone has air conditioning!” tweeted Television writer Rick G. Rosner. “Ultra-Douche Ted Cruz ran away and left his dog in a freezing cold house.”

“Ted Cruz has absolutely no shame” tweeted Tim Fullerton, former aide to former President Barack Obama. “None.”

“Ted Cruz flew to Cancun as millions of his constituents grappled with deadly power outages and freezing temperatures associated with a severe winter storm.” tweeted Journalist John Haltiwanger.

“If there’s one person on the planet that shouldn’t be talking about this, it’s Ted Cruz,” said podcaster and author Ryan Phillips tweeted.

Newsom’s efforts to persuade Californians to conserve energy to avoid major blackouts may have been successful, as plans for the widespread blackouts have yet to materialize.

The Democratic governor celebrated avoiding the emergency power outages Tuesday night, despite a smaller number of accidentally issued power outages being reported the next day.

The California electric grid operator later blamed the erroneous power outages on “miscommunications,” which led the utilities to believe the outages were ordered, according to The Center Square.
