Ted Cruz was faced with seeking a 3rd term despite pushing for a 2 term limit

Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, was confronted on Sunday that he is seeking a third term in the Senate, despite earlier pushing for the term to be capped at two six-year terms.

During an appearance on CBS News Face the nationHer host, Margaret Brennan, asked the senator, “Why don’t you live up to that standard? You said you were running for a third term.”

“I’m a passionate defender of term limits. I think that Congress would function much better if every Senator was limited to two terms, if every member of the House of Representatives was limited to three terms. I introduced a constitutional amendment to put this into the Constitution,” Cruz replied.

Last November, the Texas Republican confirmed he plans to run for the Senate again in 2024, despite reinstating a bill last month that would bar senators from serving more than two terms. The constitutional amendment would also prevent representatives from the House of Representatives from serving more than three two-year terms.

Those who served a term prior to the possible passage of the bill will not be subject to the proposed term limits. This means that if the law were passed in Congress, Cruz would not be limited until 2036, according to The Texas Tribune last week.

On Sunday, Cruz said he would comply with term limits if the proposed amendment is passed.

“If and when it’s over, I’ll be happy, happy to follow.” I never said I would give in unilaterally. I’ll tell you what if the socialists and when the swamp … are ready to leave Washington, I’ll happily abide by the same rules that apply to everyone. But until then, I’ll keep fighting for 30 million Texans because they asked me to,” he said.

Cruz said in a statement in late January that term limits are important to fixing “what’s wrong with Washington, DC.”

“The Founding Fathers envisioned a government of citizen lawmakers who would serve for a few years and return home, not a government run by a small group of special interest and lifelong, permanently entrenched politicians who would take advantage of Washington’s disruption to… governing in any way is totally irresponsible to the American people,” the Texas senator added.

Last November, Cruz said his focus was on the “fighting” in the Senate, adding that “we must stand and fight” against policies that are doing “so much harm” to Americans.
