Ted Sams from San Gabriel finally graduates from high school 60 years after missing his final exams

PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) — A 78-year-old man from San Gabriel has a lot to celebrate.

After Ted Sams missed his high school graduation in 1962 for diving in hot water as a teenager, he eventually received his diploma along with the Class of 2022.

Sams was invited by San Gabriel High School to walk the stage during Friday’s graduation at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Dressed in a full cap and gown, he walked alongside students 60 years his junior and he couldn’t have been happier.

“When I came back with my grade, they didn’t give me my diploma because I owed $4.80 for a book, so I just walked away and said forget it,” Sams said of his time as a senior.

Sams said he failed to graduate after getting into trouble and being suspended just five days before the end of the school year. He said he missed a crucial final exam and will have to make up for it in the summer.

“Over the years, I’ve complained to my kids several times that $4.80 is keeping me from getting my diploma,” he said.

To add to the happy occasion, the school still had Sams’ original diploma locked away in an old filing cabinet.

Sams, who is officially a high school grad, said he plans to post his diploma on the wall at home.
