The Clearwater Beach and Pinellas County barrier islands were closed as Hurricane Idalia passed

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Authorities have closed access to a number of offshore islands and beaches while monitoring weather conditions as Hurricane Idalia passes through the area.

On Wednesday morning, police reported flooding around Clearwater Beach and elsewhere in the city. Access to the beach is blocked, even for people with a barrier permit. Police said people could exit the area but could not get there from Memorial Causeway or Sand Key.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office closed access to the county’s barrier islands at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Neither residents nor visitors have access to the following areas:

  • Belleair Beach
  • Belleair Shore
  • Indian Rocks Beach
  • Indian coasts
  • Madeira beach
  • North Redington Beach
  • Redington Beach
  • Redington Shores
  • St Pete Beach
  • Tierra Verde
  • treasure island
