Warning: The following contains spoilers for Sunday The company you keep. Proceed at your own risk!
One of The company you keep‘s great secrets are revealed: During Sunday’s episode, Charlie was kidnapped by the CIA and interrogated before learning that his girlfriend Emma is an agency officer!
Knowing the truth about Emma, Charlie set out to pull off a giant con in hopes of then attacking her directly. When a masked Charlie presented Connor with $10 million, Emma watched the exchange from a nearby car. Now the question is: when will Emma study be Secret?
“It’s going to be sooner than you think, too,” her cast member Catherine Haena Kim tells TVLine. “It’s not one of those things you have to wait for [for] until the end of the season and that’s the cliffhanger. It will happen very soon.”
Below, the actress reveals how this week’s twist will impact Emma and Charlie’s budding relationship, and talks about how the chemistry is made with her co-star Milo Ventimiglia in his mistress’ entourage this is us Role.
TVLINE | I was quite surprised that Charlie found out that Emma was a CIA officer so early in the season. Did you know that was coming so soon? Have you had discussions with the producers about the timing?
Yes and no. It’s been a very collaborative experience that’s really exciting, especially in terms of the relationship and I think all aspects, the character development and even the family dynamics… You usually wait the whole season. You say, “Will they? Won’t they? Are they going to get together?” It’s like, “No, they Do”, and we do very quickly, but it’s all based on lies. So once the truth comes out, it’s like, “Will they shut up? Now what happens?” And I think that’s what’s really fun about it.
TVLINE | How does that change the dynamic between the characters and the show’s central concept now that their secret is out?
We just finished filming the finale last week, and it made me think that everyone you meet in the pilot episode is completely different than who you see in the finale, and everyone goes through a whole journey. You’ll get big revelations in every single episode. Honestly, it only gets bigger and better from this point, even the cons.
TVLINE | At the end of the episode, in this exchange with Connor, she catches a glimpse of his eyes, and it’s kind of ambiguous as to whether or not she recognized him. How did you play the last scene where she comes into his apartment and says that in this case she finally has a break?
She realizes something is wrong with him, but he also just found out that she’s a CIA officer. So she’s a little confused as to why he’s feeling down and she just puts it down to it’s been an intense week.
TVLINE | Does the fact that he now has to lie about who she is to his family cause any tension for him, either with Emma or with his family members?I think because he won’t tell them for a while until things get serious and he has to… It’s so hard when you have to keep things a secret from the people you love. This is also why I introduce myself to Emma as a CIA officer, [and] for everyone in real life [with that job], it must be so hard having to keep this a secret from your family, sometimes your partner, and that’s a form they actually have to fill out. I don’t think it’s the same name, but when you start dating someone, there’s a honeypot for a reason, and that’s why you actually have to fill out a form saying you’re dating someone, and they conduct a background check. and you’ll sometimes get caught up in surprise interrogations, even when there aren’t any red flags, just to make sure all the bases are covered.
TVLINE | Both Charlie and Emma are these master show-offs, so to speak, and they’re really good at reading people, but neither of them finds out the truth about the other on their own. So what does that say about how good their skills really are? Do they have a weakness or are they just so good that they can fool even the best?
I think all of the above are probably true. Also, when your emotions get involved and love is at stake, there’s a reason that phrase “love is blind” is there. I think both of them were careless when they met because they both had a heartbreak.
TVLINE | This show relies so much on chemistry with that kind of premise. When did you feel like you and Milo had this chemistry?
I want to say that hopefully we read our chemistry because I got the job. [Laughs] Which was also crazy because it was my first in-person audition in over two and a half years because it was all done on zoom or it was selfies that were submitted. When I found out I have a call back for such an exciting role, but also personally and with Milo and a chemistry read, I was just like, “OK…” [Laughs] Milo and I talked so much about [that] Chemistry is something that’s so immaterial, and it’s really flattering to hear that people like and feel our chemistry. I honestly think it comes down to trust and it’s an emotional connection and we had the luxury of doing a few rehearsals before we even got on the set. But he’s also a producer on this project, and because he’s just on the ground and in the trenches with me as an actor, there’s a level of trust that feels good, and I think that’s why there’s room to play and be spontaneous and create that chemistry.
TVLINE | He gets away with playing half of this beloved couple this is us. After Jack and Rebecca Pearson, did you feel any pressure to have that instant connection between your characters and him?
I know. Well I feel like an iconic couple and I’m so thankful we have that and now we can create something new. I always joke that — related but not related — in life, I always like to think I’m leaving my exes a little better off than I found them. I hope I do! I don’t think it’s always intentional. But I am always grateful to all the great women who have come before me when I meet someone new who is amazing. I get the impression that Milo was pretty great as an actor and as a person before he even met Mandy [Moore], but the way she spoke on set, I mean I know he’s so much better with her because of his six years. And indeed, she did me a favor and made me a really, really nice video for him as part of his gift.
