“I don’t have a lot of opinions about the royal family. That’s an advantage here, isn’t it?” Debicki said ahead of her Season 5 debut as Princess Diana.
Elizabeth Debicki had a royal advantage when she was cast as Princess Diana in The Crown.
The Australian actress revealed to British Vogue that she doesn’t follow news about the royal family, adding that the Daily Mail’s endless coverage “makes me sick”.
“I don’t have a lot of opinions about the royal family. That’s an advantage here, isn’t it?” Debicki, who joins the Emmy-winning Netflix series in Season 5, said.
As for backslapping royals, like some of her The Crown co-stars, Debicki added, “No. Maybe now I never will. Prince Harry seems to be having fun.”
The fifth season of ‘The Crown’ starts on November 9 and has already caused controversy following the death of Queen Elizabeth II earlier this year.
“Everyone who works on the show has a sense of how extremely difficult it is to be born into something like this [life]’ Debicki said. “The rules are also decided for you: less is more. Although, of course, Diana broke this rule. She broke the fourth wall, reaped the benefits, but the consequences were harsh and heavy. I would say it is a tremendous gift to know what I have learned about this person. In many ways, it’s a story of immense transformation—and triumph, too. The public watched as she blossomed into an incredibly strong woman trying to control a narrative that was the most salacious thing ever.”
Referring to the Daily Mail’s coverage, Debicki said of the late Princess Diana: “If you’re media fodder, what a newspaper sells is all they sell, but for her it was always personal. How could it not be?
“I hope I did something interesting for them,” Debicki said. “That is the ultimate goal.”
Created by Peter Morgan, The Crown follows the story of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign beginning with her coronation in 1952. Debicki joined the cast as Princess Diana, with Dominic West taking on the role of Prince Charles and Imelda Staunton playing the part Role of Queen Elizabeth took over, along with Jonathan Pryce as Prince Phillip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Jonny Lee Miller as British Prime Minister John Major, Olivia Williams as Charles’ wife-to-be Camilla Parker Bowles, Marcia Warren as the Queen’s mother and Timothy Dalton as Margaret’s lover Peter Townsend.
