Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power takes viewers into a new era of Middle-earth. Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series is a prequel to the main story

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a new series coming to Amazon that acts as a prequel to the main events of The Hobbit and Lord of the rings. Set thousands of years before these events, the series begins at a time of peace in Middle-earth. The series will cover various events including the forging of the Rings of Power and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron.
Peter Jackson was responsible for adapting Tolkien’s works for the big screen. Lord of the Rings is still considered one of the greatest film trilogies of all time. However, the director is not involved in this The Rings of Powerwhich means a new creative team will bring Middle-earth to life.
JA Bayona did not use Peter Jackson’s films as inspiration for the new series
In an interview with Collider, Bayona spoke about his inspiration for the look of The Rings of Power. He said he didn’t use Jacksons Lord of the rings Movies as an influence for the series. Instead, he delved deep into Tolkien’s novels to capture the author’s vision as best as possible.
“You know, when I think of the Peter Jackson films, what I love and admire most is how great he was at capturing Tolkien’s spirit,” Bayona said. “So in the end, it’s about going to the source material and going to the books. So that’s what I did. I went back to the books, I read them again, and it’s all in there. You can tell how cinematic Tolkien was when the way he depicts the landscape reflects the mood of the characters. It’s the kind of style I love. When I’m making a film, I’m always trying to add visual elements and that sense of beauty to the story.”
“For example, I knew from the start that the cinematographer I always work with is perfect because he loves beauty so much, as you can see by reading Tolkien’s books,” Bayona added. “And from the moment you choose the cinematographer, you define the style of the show. So basically it was about going back to the books and trying to understand them and how they translate visually. And just like you said, it’s a very different time period. So you really need to go back to those places, but you will see them in a very different way.”
Bayona shares his favorite moment from the movies
Although Bayona didn’t use Jackson’s films for inspiration, he has respect for them and shared his favorite moment with Collider. The director shared his favorite moment at the end return of the king when the kingdom bows to the hobbits.
“I think there’s a very beautiful moment when at the end return of the king, everyone kneels before the hobbits and the camera kneels before them,” Bayona said. “So Peter Jackson, basically he knelt down the whole world to the hobbits. I thought that was beautiful.”
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Premiered on Amazon Prime Video on September 2nd.
