Fast and Furious is a film franchise spanning more than twenty years, 10 films and a variety of media spinoffs. The movie stars Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, two actors who love playing the role of the tough guy, and in that role they both want to win.
It’s not just the characters who want to win every fight – many of the actors in the franchise are also concerned that their characters look like they emerge from every fight scene relatively unscathed. Some of the key players were so concerned about their fighting image that specific demands were written into their contracts.
Both Diesel and Johnson have specific fight scene details in their contracts
When a franchise is as big as Fast and Furious With more than one big star in its ranks, it’s no surprise that scoring has become part of the deal — so much so that some of that equal treatment has been written into actors’ contracts.
Johnson, Diesel and Jason Statham all belong to the category of actors who have written into their contracts that they refuse to have their characters lost in a fight scene. One way the franchise has solved these character issues is by using a scorecard system developed by Diesel to ensure every punch and kick is returned with the same passion, according to The Guardian.
This meant that every fight scene was meticulously choreographed so even if someone took a few hard hits, no one would emerge the clear winner of a fight.
Diesel and Johnson have been at odds for years
It’s not just the fight scenes that the two actors had disagreements over over the years filming the film series together. Johnson and Diesel have had many small feuds, some of which have been aired publicly for fans to see and react to. When Johnson decided not to return with the film series Fast and furious 10Diesel publicly advocated Johnson’s return.
Johnson responded to the post by letting fans know the two men had met offline and opening up about the reasons he didn’t return. Johnson called Diesel’s post “an example of his manipulation” of wanting to leave the franchise on his own terms. He said in an interview with CNN:
“My goal all along was to end my amazing journey with this incredible Fast and Furious Franchise with gratitude and grace. It is unfortunate that this public dialogue has muddied the waters.”
Johnson’s contracts for the films stipulate that his character never looks weak
As well as giving equal punch to punch in his fight scenes, Johnson also altered certain of his character’s actions or reactions to ensure his character doesn’t look weak on screen. According to The Guardian, Johnson asked his character to sit down after a fight scene instead of lying down The fate of the angry.
Johnson isn’t the only one keeping an eye on his image considering he was a former WWE wrestler and wants to maintain that power on screen. It was reported by The Guardian that Johnson’s sister was present on set, watching rehearsals of the fight scenes and speaking up if she thought his character wasn’t getting enough licks back in against his sparring partner.
No matter how complicated Johnson, Diesel, and other top-list actors get to finalize their deals for the Fast and Furious franchise, the resulting films are adored by fans around the world.
