The father of 9-year-old Nashville shooting victim Hallie Scruggs is a pastor and a board member at the school

A student who was shot dead Monday at a Christian private school in Nashville was the daughter of her senior pastor, records and tributes on social media reflect.

The student, one of six people killed alongside the shooter at Covenant School, has been identified by police as Hallie Scruggs. Her father is Chad Scruggs, pastor of the Covenant Presbyterian Church, confirmed the Nashville Presbytery to CBS News.

According to a memorial post from a self-proclaimed sister church, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, Hallie was the youngest child in the Scruggs family. The post said Chad Scruggs graduated from Presbyterian Church in America’s Covenant Theological Seminary in 2007 with a Masters of Divinity degree.

According to their website, Covenant School was founded in 2001 as a ministry of the church, and the two share an address. Chad Scruggs, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Beast, is also identified on the website as an ex-officio member of the school’s board of trustees.

The other ex-Officio board member listed is Katherine Koonce, the 60-year-old school principal and another victim of Monday’s shooting.

A friend of Koonce’s, Diane Button, wrote in a text to The Daily Beast: “You could always count on Katherine to show up with her huge heart and brilliant mind. I have no doubt that she died while giving her whole heart to the children and staff she loved so much.”

“Katherine was a role model for me,” Button wrote. “She was as solid as a friend can be. Her faith was her foundation. Her family was her greatest love, but she always wanted to work and give back so that other families and children can feel loved and cared for as well.”

The other fatally wounded victims were two other 9-year-olds, identified as Evelyn Dieckhaus and William Kinney, and two other staff members: 61-year-old caretaker Mike Hall and 61-year-old substitute teacher Cynthia Peak.

The gunman, 28-year-old Nashville resident Audrey Hale, was killed by police, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said. The suspect was armed with two assault rifles and a handgun. At least two of those guns appeared to have been legally purchased in the Nashville area, police said.

Founded in 2001, Covenant School employs 33 teachers who serve approximately 200 students from pre-primary to sixth grade. The father of 9-year-old Nashville shooting victim Hallie Scruggs is a pastor and a board member at the school
