Rep. Elise Stefanik, a New York Republican, faced criticism Friday after touting federal funding for hospitals in her state stemming from laws she opposed last year.
In a press release Wednesday, Stefanik announced that five hospitals in her district will receive $12.9 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Some of the hospitals receiving funds are Adirondack Medical Center, Carthage Area Hospital and Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center.
“This significant investment will help strengthen rural hospitals in upstate New York and upstate after revenue losses due to the coronavirus pandemic, address physician shortages and ensure these hospitals can continue to serve the healthcare needs of our community,” said Stefanik.
Politico first reported Friday that those funds came from the American Rescue Plan, legislation proposed by President Joe Biden in 2021 to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Not a single Republican congressman voted in favor of the law, and members of the party said it was too expensive and provided too many resources unrelated to the pandemic.
“Shameless hypocrite: @RepStefanik gives credit to @POTUS’ American bailout plan…AGAIN,” Jaime Harrison, the chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), tweeted on Friday, also linking to the Politico article.
“Elise Stefanik’s attempt to appropriate credit for money she voted against comes as no surprise to #NY21. Cheats will cheat,” wrote Matt Castelli, a Democratic candidate who challenged Stefanik in the midterm elections this November.
In response to a request for comment from news weekAlex DeGrasse, a senior adviser to Stefanik, wrote: “Congressman Stefanik is one of the most effective congressmen in providing federal funds to her constituents, whether they are the minority or the majority. She voted no to Pelosi’s radical spending bills because of far-left regulations.”
“But she will always effectively deliver solutions and tools to her constituents, and she will announce and promote them as they are delivered. The mainstream media is working overtime as stenographers for the desperate Democrats poised to lose the majority,” DeGrasse continued.
Stefanik’s adviser also said that the Republican congressman’s position “stands in stark contrast to her Democratic country opponent Matt Castelli, who has backed every single trillion-dollar Biden-Pelosi spending package that has fueled record inflation. Apparently, Joe Biden White House propagandists have said that they are calling on their left-wing stenographic media allies to obsess over Elise Stefanik with 25 days until Election Day.
He added: “Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi will be fired upon by the red wave in November because of the crises they have created for the American people. The fact that the White House communications shop is spending its time attacking Elise Stefanik shows that they are The American people will fire Nancy Pelosi once and for all in 2022 and then quickly fire Joe Biden in 2024.”
Last month, Biden sneered at Republicans who voted against the bipartisan $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill passed last November but touted projects the bill ultimately funds.
At a DNC meeting in Maryland, Biden said that “there are many more Republicans claiming credit for this bill than actually voted for it. I see her out there.”
