One of the biggest criticisms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the franchise’s inception has been the lack of memorable villains. Sure we had a few here and there, but not nearly enough for a saga that spans 30 feature films and multiple TV shows. break with tradition, The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special takes a new approach to the topic.
In an interview with Variety, James Gunn broke down his process of writing the Marvel Studios Special Presentation and revealed that he toyed with an antagonist harassing the titular team during their adventure on Earth, only to decide the best method was to do so to drop the villain altogether and focus on the story instead.
“The cool thing is that there is no villain in this film. There aren’t any Marvel stories that I can think of that didn’t have some villain.”
There’s no obligation for any comic book adaptation to feature a villain trying to make the heroes’ lives a misery, and in some cases we wish the MCU had gone down that route. In typically refreshing honesty, Gunn admitted that he just wasn’t interested in putting a villain in the holiday special, so he chose to go ahead without one.
“Before I wrote the screenplay, I wrote a treatment, and in the treatment there was this other threat. I just realized that I wasn’t interested in that other thing. There was an action sequence at the end with Kevin Bacon jumping around and doing action stunts, which would have been pretty cool, but the threat didn’t interest me at all. What interested me was the interaction between the characters. So I just cut that out and made it a story about people.”
Kevin Bacon seems like a more than acceptable replacement, with The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special Gain strong reviews right out of the gate. It’s destined to become an annual tradition for MCU fans around the world, and it’ll pull off that feat without the slightest hint of mustache-twirling malevolence.
