The House GOP names Mike Johnson as its nominee for speaker

House Republicans conducted three rounds of voting Tuesday night, narrowing the field of House speaker candidates to Reps. Byron Donalds of Florida and Mike Johnson of Louisiana. Johnson won the third round, according to House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (RN). .Y.).

“Congratulations on speaker-designate @RepMikeJohnson!” Stefanik wrote in a post on X.

Earlier in the day, Republicans held several rounds of voting, with House Majority Leader Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) emerging as the GOP speaker nominee only to drop out just hours later.

Former President Donald Trump harshly criticized Emmer truth socialcalled the congressman “a globalist RINO” and warned that voting for the lawmaker would be a tragic mistake!

“I have many wonderful friends who want to be Speaker of the House, and some are truly great warriors. RINO Tom Emmer, who I don’t know well, is not one of them,” Trump wrote in the post.

Previously, the House GOP had nominated Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio as its candidate for speaker, but Jordan’s bid ultimately failed after he failed to win the gavel in three separate votes in the House. The House GOP previously nominated House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana as its candidate, but he later dropped out.
