Hoffmann was a guest at the Only murders in the pod Podcast on August 24, the day after the season finale aired. Now that fans have discovered the full secret, Hoffman discussed how her right hand has evolved.
Cast availability affected who was the killer’s accomplice
Michael Rappaport played Detective Kreps, who investigates Mabel’s (Selena Gomez) role in Bunny’s (Jayne Houdyshell) murder. Turns out he was helping Poppy (Adina Verson) frame her. There may have been other characters who were there with Poppy, but Hoffman said the show lost her to other gigs.

“This was one that had some alternatives to it,” Hoffman continued Only murders in the pod. “Even when we were in the writers’ room, we were actually building the season and working out the episodes. Some things need to be modular. As much as you want to make something clever, then in production you find yourself at the mercy of the whim or will of oh my god, guess what, this actor just got a job in Australia and won’t be coming back to turn. Certain things like this need to play and hold loose enough to have variation.

Hoffman said each of Poppy’s accomplices must be in law enforcement. That Only murders in the building Season 2’s mystery contained clues that required someone on the inside to pay off.

“Well, that was one of those things that we always knew would be intriguing and potentially reconnect with red herrings and loose ends,” Hoffman said. “There were some questions left over from Season 1 and there were always questions left that we’re keeping an eye on. Maybe we want to answer that now. So possibly someone in the world of Teddy Dimas and in the world of the precinct who might have been handling some of the Tim Kono stuff. Where has this evidence gone? Something is happening out there.”

Hoffman narrowed down the possibilities of who Poppy might work with Only murders in the building Season 2. After clearing all the requirements of the mystery, Hoffman realized he had the perfect actor to play it.
“So there’s a certain connection to that and also a long game within the game that you ultimately want to care about and have all the characters emotionally invested in,” Hoffman said. “What would it take for a guy like that? It will usually be in the lane of potential income or new fresh cash inflow or love. I think both play a role here, then Michael Rapaport is just fantastic.”
