The ‘National Treasure’ producer shares an update on Nicolas Cage’s long-awaited return to the franchise

National Treasure Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has offered some updates on the current phase of the third installment in the franchise, which has been in development for almost 15 years.

Speaking to E! about the new Disney Plus series in the set National Treasure Universum told Bruckheimer that he and his team are “developing one National Treasure for the theaters with Nicolas Cage” when they approached Disney about the TV show. “Which we still are, so this goes on,” he continued.

In April of this year, Cage apparently dashed fans’ hopes for a third film when he said in an “Ask Me Anything” Reddit thread that it probably wouldn’t happen as “the priority was to shoot.” [the movies] into a TV show.” A few months later, in August, Bruckheimer flipped the switch and told ComicBook they were working on the script and were awaiting Cage’s approval.

This back and forth doggedly pursued the third film for years, through script changes and delays. Bruckheimer’s update sounds hopeful, but it also seems to indicate that Disney hasn’t even greenlit the film yet.

Cage may yet appear in an upcoming episode of the spin-off series, National Treasure: Edge of History, episodes for which will be released weekly through February. It wouldn’t be the first time that producers and writers have kept a big star’s appearance a secret in order to increase its impact on fans. Although the show has not been renewed for a second season, rumors are circulating that Cage will be a part of it in the future.

The connection of the third film with edge of history is unclear, but fans will remember 2007 National Treasure: Book of Secrets set up a third cliffhanger film about the mysterious page 47 of the Book of Secrets.
