Listen, this isn’t your parents’ hellraiser. This reinvention of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic stars a woman for the first time as the main antagonist, Pinhead.
And if you’ve never seen any of the previous Hellraiser movies, don’t worry, you don’t have to. This is perfect to start with or add to your collection of favourites.
Hulu’s “Hellraiser” follows a young woman struggling with addiction when she ends up with a mysterious ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the evil cenobites. The cenobites are ex-humans turned monsters, harvesting human souls to torture in their sadistic experiments.
Jamie Clayton told On the Red Carpet that she didn’t want to emulate Doug Bradley’s original performance as Pinhead. She attempted to make it her own, describing this cenobite leader as “something new, different, sensual, and terrifying.”
“I think it was a really wise decision to cast a woman in the role because it kind of relieves the audience of wanting or trying to compare that performance to Doug’s,” Clayton said. “In ‘Hellbound Heart,’ the cenobites are described as this kind of sexless, neutral beings, and so I think it’s fun, it’s smart, it’s interesting.”
According to Clayton, the transformation into Pinhead took between 4.5 and 6 hours. At the end of the day, removing the mask and makeup took another 30-60 minutes.
“I hope people who haven’t seen the films can see this one and really enjoy it,” Clayton said. “People who’ve seen them all and are die-hard fans will enjoy what we’ve made.”
The film was directed by David Bruckner and also stars Odessa A’zion, Adam Faison, Drew Starkey and Brandon Flynn.
Hellraiser premieres exclusively on Hulu Friday, October 7th.
