The new Mercedes SL offers more power, advanced technology and a higher price

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The Mercedes SL has been an icon for Mercedes-Benz from the very beginning. It was born for the race track in the 1950s and later became a status symbol representing wealth and power. If you saw anyone real or fictional behind the wheel of an SL, they had it running.

The new seventh generation of the Mercedes SL has many new changes. The new SL model continues to run on petrol and has significantly more power as standard.

This latest iteration falls under the Mercedes-AMG umbrella. The performance cure is no longer optional for the legendary roadster. With biturbo V8 outputs ranging from 469 to 577 hp, the SL is better suited to the world of exotic high-horsepower cars. The sticker price for this vehicle is high.

Because it’s a newer version and a wilder version, the 2022 AMG-bred SL starts at nearly $140,000 with only V8s.

A new SL with V6 power was still available in 2020 for under $100,000. There was no model version 2021.

Price and performance upgrades aside, there are many changes to this roadster. Starting with what makes it a roadster, a new foldable soft top replaces the previous foldable hard top. The multi-layer fabric roof saves weight and increases luggage capacity over the metal roof mechanism used on the previous two SL generations. The first five had collapsible soft tops and hard tops that had to be lifted into place.

There are also different types of technology that are expected in a car like this. There’s also some chassis tech with all-wheel steering. The rear wheels rotate in the opposite direction to the front wheels at speeds below 100 km/h, resulting in a very small turning radius in relation to the car’s wheelbase. This is helpful when maneuvering around corners and in tight parking spaces. At higher speeds, the rear wheels steer in the same direction as the front wheels for more stable cornering. This all happens automatically when the steering wheel is turned.

Another significant change for this 2022 SL model is that it is now a four-door hatchback with very small rear seats. All previous generations of the car were designed as two-seaters. Hardly anyone wants to drive in the back because the seats are small, even for children. It’s better suited for small cargo, but now that the new model is a four-seater, it lets the car compete with four-seater convertible models from BMW, Lexus and Porsche.

There’s a lot of history on this car, and it arrives in a changing automotive world where electrification and SUVs are the stars.

The SL is such a storied part of this brand and it’s very likely that Mercedes-Benz will always make sure they have an SL model for those who want to drive in style.
