The non-profit organization Hope of the Valley will be expanding its homeless service to more communities starting next year

NORTH HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The non-profit organization Hope of the Valley began as a small rescue service in Sun Valley. It has now morphed into an organization for the homeless with a number of facilities throughout the San Fernando Valley.

The organization says it will expand its efforts to help the homeless beyond the San Fernando Valley. Beginning January 1st, Hope of the Valley will officially change its name to Hope the Mission.

“How does someone just walk into your life and give you everything you need? How does someone just open the doors to their program and say, ‘We’re going to help you,'” said Chantel Lopez, receptionist for Hope of the Valley.

Chantel Lopez was a single mother with twin daughters who lived in an apartment with her mother, sister Brenda, and nephew. After her eviction in 2019, Chantel said she was homeless and had no choice but to move into a motel with her family.

“We were filled with hope and faith. All the doors that we thought would be open to us were closed,” Lopez said.

The doors opened again for Chantel when her sister told her about Hope of the Valley. The non-profit organization has been helping the homeless for the past 13 years by providing food, shelter and services.

CEO and Founder Ken Craft helped Chantel and her family get free lodging at one of the program’s facilities in Chatsworth.

“They had gone through a really tough time and were able to come out the other side,” Craft said.

Chantel and her sister got back on their feet and are now employees of the organization.

“One of them runs our job center and the other runs our front office here. And it’s so exciting to see people coming through very difficult times and rising above the challenges,” said Craft.

Hope of the Valley has more than 1,400 beds in 15 locations, including tiny homes in six villages throughout the Valley.

“There are still so many people living in camps and suffering and languishing in the streets. So it’s our responsibility to do whatever we can,” Craft said.
