The Sandman Stars Explain Why Next Season Isn’t Part of Season 2

The Sandman Stars Kirby Howell-Baptisteand Vivienne Acheampong recently announced why the newer episodes of the popular series will not be featured in the second season.

The Sandman, based on the 1989 DC/Vertigo comic of the same name, follows a character named Dream, or as others might call him Morpheus, on a quest to find his lost magic items after breaking out of his prison. During his imprisonment, Dream was being held captive in a glass bottle by a magician. The series, which was filmed in London, England in 2020, debuted on the streaming service in August. After its premiere The Sandman received the number one spot on Netflix and was later renewed for a second season.

In addition to Howell-Baptiste and Acheampong, the cast of the show also includes Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie, Jenna Coleman, Boyd Holbrook, Mason Alexander Park, David Thewlis, Charles Dance, Razane Jammal and many others. On December 17, during an interview with Collider, both Howell-Baptiste and Acheampong explained why the show’s renewal is not being listed as a second season, but rather as a continuation of the first season.

Acheampong, who plays the character Lucienne, told the publication that it made sense not to include her as other characters’ stories are yet to be fully developed The Sandman‘s future episodes in the second season.

“We’re aware because I think it’s such a unique thing anyway sandman. So to call it season two, I guess it’s not because there’s just more stories to tell. Like Kirby said, we literally don’t know what that’s going to be like.”

As for Howell-Baptiste playing the role of Death, she claims so The SandmanComic director and writer Neil Gaiman may have played a big part in why the new episodes won’t be part of season two.

The actress agreed with Acheampong’s earlier comments about the underdeveloped stories of various characters. However, she also shared that due to Gaiman’s relationship with his fans, there is a mutual understanding as to why this had to happen the way it did.

“Well I’d say I think part of the hesitancy to call it season two is one of the things it’s about sandman, and one of the things about Neil is that Neil loves his fans and I think there’s an understanding that we’ve told some of the stories and there’s more to tell. So it’s about much more. And if you’re a fan of the comics, you know how many stories there are. It’s just that as soon as you put it in a TV format, it resolves.”

Although there are limited details as to when the newer episodes of The Sandman will premiere, viewers can catch up on the series by watching Season 1 on Netflix.
