Warning: This post contains spoilers Luminous girls‘ Season 1 finale.
Those who have read Lauren Beukes Luminous girls will probably remember the cinematic ending of the novel, in which Kirby eventually defeats Harper, the serial killer who nearly killed her years ago. Dan, Kirby’s partner in the hunt for Harper, plays a large part in Kirby’s victory. And before the story ends, a triumphant kiss from Kirby and Dan.
However, Apply TV+’s adaptation of the book chose not to have the characters of Elisabeth Moss and Wagner Moura romantically involved. In fact, Dan is dead at one point in the finale…but thanks to the shifting realities of the series, he’s alive again in the closing minutes of the finale. Kirby finds him sitting in a bar and although she looks familiar, he doesn’t know her. She scribbles something in his notebook and adds, “If you ever remember, you know where to find me.”
“We wanted to make sure it didn’t come out of nowhere, that there was a chemistry, that there was a connection,” Moss, who is also an executive producer on the series, tells TVLine. She adds that the format of an eight-episode television series — which also differs from the novel in other ways — didn’t allow enough time and space to do justice to a secondary love story between Kirby and Dan.
“If you do it, we wanted to do it really well. So we wanted to point that out and the possibility,” she continues. “Of course, if there were more episodes, you might see more of them. But we were a little concerned that it was going to be like, ‘Oh, von course. Of course they fall in love.’ That’s not really the story, you know?”
Showrunner Silka Luisa points out that Dan’s belief in Kirby and her admittedly hard story to swallow is part of what gives her the courage to face Harper in the mysterious house in the season finale.
“I still feel like the heart of the show is the Kirby-Dan relationship,” the EP reads. “That’s really what you’re cheering for. This is their emotional core. For someone who is so isolated to suddenly have someone who understands what’s going on with you to have an ally is tremendous and I think the connection they have between them actually helps her move forward in important ways points in history.”
