The “Star Wars” theory suggests that Palpatine was much better at playing politics than he was as Emperor

Say what you want war of stars‘ Emperor Palpatine, but the guy really knew how to play the long game. In front the phantom menace, He hatched a sinister plan to slowly take control of the Galactic Senate, crush the Jedi Order, and establish himself as the all-powerful Imperial ruler. Then, as we’ve seen in the prequels, he executed it almost flawlessly.

Things fell apart surprisingly quickly after that. The Empire existed just 24 years before the rebels’ decisive victory at the Battle of Endor, which destroyed the second Death Star and culminated in the deaths of Darth Vader and Palpatine (well, temporarily in his case). Now fans are coming to the conclusion that while Palpatine was an A-Plus schemer, he might not have been the best at actually ruling the galaxy with an iron fist.

In a long post on r/StarWars, user ‘sammyjamez’ goes over his mistakes. They argue that replacing Clone Troopers with Storm Troopers was a mistake, that his officers’ cutthroat ethic meant they could not work as a team, that governing out of fear would inevitably lead to popular rebellion, and that he ultimately did not capitalize on his mastery of power.

It’s difficult to disagree, and the simple fact that Palpatine’s regime collapsed so suddenly proves that it wasn’t the most stable of organizations. Fans seem to agree with this assessment, but point out that the Empire is clearly a parallel to Nazi Germany and should be read in that light:

Others say that the Imperial military structure may have been designed to prevent them from turning against him:

Are fascist systems like this doomed to fail because of their inherent incompetence?

Many of these rich themes can be seen in full Andorwhich you should definitely catch up on if you haven’t seen them yet:

AndorCurrently set for a likely debut in 2024, Season 2 of Shooters is set to show the rebels becoming the “Rebel Alliance” and the formative stages of the campaign that will eventually bring down the Empire. Along the way we’ll surely get more glimpses of life under the Imperial thumb for ordinary people, as well as some clues as to why it was always destined to fall.

For all of that, you have to respect Palpatine’s skills as a schemer. Maybe the worst that could happen to him was achieving his goals and not conquering a galaxy or overthrowing the Jedi Order?
