The US advances with a win over Iran at the World Cup

The USA finished second in Group B and meet the Netherlands on Saturday with a chance of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002.

WASHINGTON — Christian Pulisic scored when he slammed headfirst into the keeper in the 38th minute, and the United States advanced to the knockout rounds of the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Iran on Tuesday night-forward a century.

Stretched out on the field, Pulisic lay in goal for about three minutes as he was treated by US staff. He returned to the game but was substituted early in the second half.

Back in the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament, the USA opened with ties against Wales and England and needed a win to progress to the last 16 – the minimum achievement to consider the four-year cycle a success.

The Americans finished second in Group B on five points, two behind England, and play the Netherlands on Saturday with a chance of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002.

Iran finished third with three points and have failed to advance in all six World Cup appearances

Iran and the United States have competed in a World Cup before, in France in 1998, when Iran defeated the United States 2-1. The game between the two teams 24 years ago is considered one of the most politically explosive matches in football history.

Before the game, during an unusual pre-game press conference, Adams was asked to defend the US’s treatment of black people and fined for voicing the opponent “Eye-ran” instead of “E-ran”. American coach Gregg Berhalter was quizzed about US immigration and naval policies and apologized for the US Football Association’s decision to remove the Islamic Republic emblem from the Iranian flag on social media.

The USSF’s flag decision was intended to support women protesters in Iran.
