‘The Way Home’ ‘She’s All That’ Scene – Interview with Chyler Leigh

If The way home‘s Kat descended a flight of stairs in a red dress to the tune of Sixpence None The Richer’s “Kiss Me” in Episode 5, it was hardly the first time her cast member Chyler Leigh had paid homage to her to the iconic scene from the 90s classic film for teenagers She is everything.
Leigh told TVLine that the producers of the Hallmark Channel time-travelling family drama “definitely knew” that the actress had previously re-enacted the moment Rachael Leigh Cook lives in She is everything Character reveals her makeover as she descends a flight of stairs to a stunned Freddie Prinze Jr. Leigh’s first glimpse of the scene occurred in the 2001 parody Not another teen movie, versus Chris Evans, in far sillier circumstances. (Instead of stumbling on the last step like Cook did, Leigh’s character fell down the stairs dramatically.)
The way homeHowever, ‘s version was a lot more candid when Kat went downstairs to meet her best friend Elliot (who is pining for her) to accompany the high school’s ’90s dance. (Conveniently, Kat and her daughter Alice also time travel back to 1999, when She is everything was released throughout Season 1.) To top off the perfect tribute, Kat stumbles at the bottom of the stairs, as does Cook’s Laney. Check it out below:

When Leigh read the script for the episode, “I laughed so hard. I was like, ‘Oh my god, you didn’t!'” the actress shares with a laugh. “But they always had that moment in their minds from the start. From what Alex [Clarke] and heath [Conkie], our showrunners, had told me when I had the first conversation, they said, ‘When we got this project, we always had you in mind. So when we were writing that, it was always kind of part of wanting that to happen.’”
But Leigh was a little afraid to return to that beloved moment: “I was like, ‘Wow, that’s like 20 years later. I feel a bit old, but maybe at the same time may That red dress still rocks,” Leigh recalls.
The actress was also able to make a much-needed fashion change to the iconic scarlet outfit to accommodate the Canadian temperatures in which the series is filmed.
“We’ve had a lot of conversations about how to do this in a way that still honors the moment but also covers me up a little bit more [for] when we have to go outside and how cold it is,” shares Leigh. So a cardigan was added for a later scene outside of the dance.
In the end, “It was so much fun, and even the little stumble downstairs with the shoes and stuff, at least I didn’t fall down the stairs, which is cool!” adds Leigh, laughing.
The way home Season 1 is currently streaming on Peacock, Hallmark Movies Now and Hallmark TV.
