Today’s Word of the Day Notes for Saturday 18 June

The rules are simple, but the answer can be difficult as to why news week offers some pointers to get you over the line in today’s Wordle.

You have six tries to get the five letter word and a lot depends on what you write down first, which of course has to be a guess.

If a letter is correct and in the right place, it turns green; if it is correct and in the wrong place, it turns yellow. A wrong letter turns grey.

When the puzzle is complete, a box will appear for people to share on social media. Many avid gamers post on Twitter how many attempts it took to find the correct answer.

The game’s name is a pun on the name of its creator Josh Wardle, an engineer who started work on it in 2013 and finished it during the COVID lockdown. With the help of his partner Palak Shah, the game was released in late 2021 and only played by a few dozen people.

Various tactics can be used. For example, Wardle said he would spend the first few tries eliminating as much of the alphabet as possible.

The game’s global reach was secured when it was purchased by The New York Times and now the game is a daily staple for millions of people. Wardle’s creation has also inspired other daily puzzles such as the globe-spanning guessing game Worldle and the math-based Nerdle.
