Wordl has become a global phenomenon since its initial release in October 2021.
The puzzle game gained popularity partly because of its simplicity, meaning newcomers can pick it up and play quickly.
Each day, players attempt to master a new five-letter word in six tries or fewer using a color-coded grid.
When a letter turns green, it is correct and in the right place, while yellow means the letter is correct but in the wrong place. A gray tile tells the player that the letter is not in the word at all.
Wordl Creator Josh Wardle narrates news week in January that he sometimes still has problems when playing.
He said, “Well, I created something Wordl and I’m not very good at it, so here’s your answer! I’m afraid I’m not really the best.
“[My partner] and I play it together on the couch every morning. She will consistently do it in three runs, which is way, way better than I can ever hope for. It usually takes me at least 4 or 5 tries.”
Wardle would later sell Wordl to the New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure sum. The game is still free to play through its website.
Wordl has inspired a number of other puzzle games, including geography-based ones worldly and the math subjects Nerd.
