He said: “There’s a reason each word is five letters long and you have six tries to guess it. This may seem arbitrary, but with the prototype version I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries.” Players were allowed.

“Through this refinement process, I found that five letters and six tries is the ideal sweet spot. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and thought-provoking, but more often than not people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”

Speak with news week, dr Claire Childs, Lecturer in English at the University of York in the UK, spoke about what makes Wordl so popular.

She said: “Which helps WordlThe success of is its simplicity – the rules are straightforward and it takes relatively little time. The fact that there is a new puzzle every day adds to the novelty. Just as we love to discuss TV, movies or music with friends/family and on social media, now we love to share how well (or badly) we’ve done Wordl this day.”

The popularity of Wordl has helped inspire a number of other online puzzles, including Quordles, Nerd and worldly.
