Tom Felton mistook Gary Oldman for the caretaker on the Harry Potter set

“I winced with embarrassment when I realized I mistook him for the cleaner,” Felton said.

Well, that could be Tom Felton’s “Darkest Hour.”

The Harry Potter graduate admitted to assuming Oscar-winning co-star Gary Oldman was a janitor while he was on the set of 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Felton wrote in his memoir Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard that Oldman was so “humble and down to earth” that it was easy to mistake him for a member of the housekeeping staff.

“There were certain actors on set that you would never really recognize out of character, even though they were absolute legends,” Felton wrote via Insider. “They just looked – and I mean that in the nicest way – like slightly unkempt older men.”

Felton compared Oldman to John Hurt and David Bradley as fellow actors who fit that description.

“One day I was on set when I saw another slightly unkempt older guy wearing a pair of old jeans and a t-shirt,” Felton continued. “I had seen him occasionally and thought he was one of the cleaners. What can I say? He just had that look.”

Felton said to Oldman, “Great job, mate!” after his shoes squeaked on the newly polished floor.

“He turned to see if I was talking to someone behind him, frowned a little oddly and said nothing,” Felton said before later seeing Oldman in the hair and makeup department.

“He seemed to be showing family and friends around,” Felton continued. “Bit odd for one of the cleaners. I had a horrible feeling that I might have made a faux pas, so when someone left, I asked, ‘Who is that?'”

It was only then that Felton was informed that Oldman would be joining the cast as Sirius Black in the third film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

“I winced with embarrassment when I realized I had mistook him for the cleaner,” Felton wrote. “I wanted to apologize — not that he really was a monkey — but I ended up taking the easier route, completely ignoring my mistake and pretending I knew who he was all along.”

Felton shared: “In my defense, for such a big star, he wasn’t starry at all. He was humble and down to earth, you could see him making a cup of tea for everyone rather than playing the room.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time a big star has got it wrong on set. Leslie Jordan previously told the Trailblazers radio show (via Entertainment Weekly) that he assumed Lady Gaga was an extra while filming American Horror Story: Roanoke.
