Tom Swift Recap: Season 1 Episode 1 – The End of the Premiere Explained

More than a year after the launch of Tom Swift via Nancy DrewThe CW on Tuesday finally invited viewers into the world of the billionaire inventor — a fashionable, futuristic fantasy where few things (and people) are as they seem.

The premiere of Tom Swift will increase in 2022 (vs. Nancy‘s 2019), meaning Tom is “a few years older, more in his 20s, and more of a grown man,” star Tian Richards told TVLine. Tom’s performance Nancy was just an appetizer, “and now you get the full meal.”

Unfortunately, Tom doesn’t seem mature enough (or straight) enough for his disapproving father, who doesn’t think Tom is ready to take control of Swift Enterprises. A possible father-son reconciliation becomes even more unlikely when Tom – in a room surrounded by his father’s closest “friends” and associates – witnesses his spacecraft explode during a live stream of a high-profile trip to Saturn.

Tom is overcome with sadness and guilt when he discovers the source of the explosion Outside of the ship, he goes into heist mode and enlists his inner circle – cousins Zenzi (Ashleigh Murray) and Lino (Donovin Miller) and bodyguard Isaac (Marquise Vilson) – to help him retrieve important information, to uncover who is really killed his father.

It’s close, but Tom manages to retrieve the data and get out alive, thanks in large part to Rowan (Albert Mwangi). Congressman Eskel’s (Ward Horton) bodyguard not only helps Tom avoid getting caught, but also warns him that he is being watched by some powerful enemies.

The conspiracy deepens when the organization that built the ship-destroying missile turns out to be owned by Eskel. Furthermore, it is actually a shell company for an Illuminati group called The Road Back, which aims to prevent humankind’s technological advancement.

Good news: Tom then learns that not only is his father alive, but that he sent a pod to Earth containing vital information needed to save his father! Sure, the pod will disintegrate upon reentering the atmosphere, but that only gives Tom and his crew an excuse for a road trip.

Little do they know that Eskel has hacked Tom’s AI Barclay (voiced by LeVar Burton) and everyone on his team – presumably including Rowan – is determined to stop Tom from discovering their plans. But was Richards surprised by this latest twist? Short answer: “No.”

Longer answer: “In our world, you learn to keep your eyes open,” says Richards. “You never know who’s who. Yes, we’re having fun, but it’s business and enterprise – these are the main areas where people aren’t what they always seem.”
