The pre-recorded video was used to preview Top Gun: Maverick and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning: Part I.
If you had to pick a motif that defined movies in 2022, you could do a lot worse than “Tom Cruise on a plane.”
Endless words were written about how Top Gun: Maverick was an undisputed triumph, garnering rave reviews from critics and raking in massive box office returns in a year when the film industry desperately needed it. The film’s success has led to an increased appreciation for Cruise’s dedication to practical effects and his own stunts, fueling anticipation for next year’s Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning: Part I.
Cruise began building anticipation for both films at this year’s CinemaCon, where attendees were shown some early footage of Dead Reckoning, as well as one of the earliest full screenings of Top Gun: Maverick. As reported by IndieWire at the time, the performances were preceded by a pre-recorded video of Cruise addressing the audience while holding for his life to a plane flying over South Africa.
Now this footage has surfaced on social media, Fans who were unable to travel to the exclusive Las Vegas event can watch the launch for themselves. And of course, Cruise does his own stunts.

Joining Cruise on the air is longtime collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed him in three Mission Impossible films (they are currently filming a fourth) and co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick. Both men are seen on separate planes, with Cruise expressing his excitement about both films and McQuarrie joking that he has to stop speaking to the audience because they have a scene to shoot.
Cruise fans will likely be thrilled to see new footage of the actor flying a plane, as many are already pining for a third Top Gun movie. The cast and crew of “Maverick” haven’t shied away from reprising their roles in another film, but they all admit it’s ultimately Cruise’s decision.
“That would be great, but that’s all up to TC,” Miles Teller said recently. “It all depends on Tom. I’ve had a few conversations with him about it. We will see.”
