Top Gun movie fans discover hilarious details in the background of the scene

One observant film buff has stratospheric social media after discovering a previously unnoticed detail in Tom Cruise’s 1986 signature hit top gun.

With Cruise back in the cockpit for the long-awaited sequel, Top Gun: Maverickit seems many fans have revisited the smash hit original directed by the late Tony Scott.

But while most are still wowed by the film’s heady mix of aerial footage, volleyball and a catchy Kenny Loggins soundtrack, one observant viewer had a different opinion upon re-watching the film.

Tom Cruise in ‘Top Gun’ (1987) – A keen-eyed fan has spotted a potential goof in the Jerry Bruckheimer classic.

Anna Drezen is a comedy writer with credits on Saturday night live and miracle worker to her name. She clearly knows a thing or two about what’s funny and is able to pull humor from the most unexpected of places.

top gun There might have been an occasional clever line, but it was never a comedy as such. However, Drezen’s observation could change that.

Watching the film again, she was surprised to see something quite unusual and out of place in the background of one shot: a seemingly ordinary table lamp that, for reasons unknown, had been adorned with one of its own top gun Cap.

“I love the role in top gun where there’s a lamp wearing a hat that says top gun‘ she wrote alongside the picture with the obvious goof.

Her observation soon gained traction as the tweet garnered over 17,000 likes alongside a flurry of retweets and comments.

Exactly how the hat got there is unclear. Perhaps Cruise’s character Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell dropped it there during his visit to see Tom Skerritt Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf at his home.

Alternatively, Viper may have put it there himself, although it doesn’t necessarily go with much of the decor and would detract from the effectiveness of the lamp itself. A hat that read “Top Gun” would fit the film’s narrative: the best pilot in Maverick’s class earned the title.

There is of course a third possibility. That someone working on the set of the film who had one top gun I temporarily placed it on the unused lamp and accidentally left it there during filming.

Whatever the truth, fans of Twitter were having a great day. “A cinematic masterpiece,” commented Brittany Ann, while houseofwoodcock joked, “I hope we get to see what Lamp-and-Hat is up to in Maverick.”

Sarah Emerson quipped, “I’ve heard of ‘lampshades’ and ‘putting a hat on a hat,’ but that’s ridiculous,” while Aidan Kelly was convinced, “That’s Andy Serkis.”

Chris Urban, meanwhile, offered to parody the film’s classic “Need for Speed” quote, writing: “I’m having a cramp. A cramp for the lamp,” while Nate Baker opted for a similar gag, commenting, “You can be my wing lamp anytime…”

JE Blanton was similarly enthusiastic, declaring, “Forget Maverick, we need a prequel to this lamp.” One fan even went so far as to re-edit the film top gun Outro to pay tribute to the lamp in the hat.
