Trump Attorney Celebrating Jan. 6 Committee Victory: ‘Waving the White Flag’

One of Donald Trump’s attorneys reacted with delight after the House Select Committee withdrew its subpoena on Jan. 6 for the former president.

Attorney Harmeet Dhillon responded after Rep. Bennie Thompson, chairman of the panel investigating the Capitol riot, confirmed that the committee would halt its attempts to get Trump to testify and turn over documents related to his investigation.

Thompson wrote to Trump’s legal team that the panel is withdrawing its subpoena as it has completed its investigation into the riot.

The clock was also essentially ticking for the former president to comply with, as the committee will shut down on Jan. 3, 2023, when the GOP takes control of the House.

In November, Trump filed a lawsuit against the January 6 committee to block the panel’s subpoena.

In a tweet, Dhillon suggested that it was this lawsuit that prompted the panel to withdraw its subpoena.

“My firm filed a separation of powers lawsuit to block the January 6 House Select Committee’s wrongful subpoena to President Trump for his activities as President — the committee waved the white flag and withdrew the subpoena,” Dhillion said.

“We were confident of winning in court, given the precedent and the refusal of previous presidents to testify in Congress. The J6 committee squandered millions on a purely political witch hunt, total abuse of process and power that served no legitimate legislative purpose. Kudos to my outstanding @dhillonlaw colleague for the win!”

The panel voted to subpoena Trump in October at the end of her ninth presentation.

Earlier this month, the committee issued a criminal referral to the Justice Department, recommending that Trump be charged with four crimes, including conspiracy to defraud the government and instigating or aiding a riot.

An 845-page report released by the panel on Dec. 23 also accused Trump of masterminding a “multiple conspiracy” to overturn the 2020 election results and the “central cause” of the Jan. 6 insurgency.

In his letter confirming the revocation of the subpoena, Thompson wrote: “As you may know, the Select Committee has completed its hearings, issued its final report and will be coming to an end very soon.

“Given the imminent conclusion of our investigation, the Special Committee cannot proceed further with the specific information contained in the subpoena.”

Trump also celebrated the subpoena against him, which was drawn despite promoting a conspiracy theory that the FBI was involved in rigging the last election against him.

“I have just been notified that the Unselect Committee of Political Thugs has withdrawn my subpoena regarding the January 6 protest against the CROOKED 2020 Presidential Election,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“They probably did it because they knew I didn’t do anything wrong or because they were about to lose in court. Perhaps the FBI’s involvement in rigging the elections contributed to their decision. In any case, the subpoena is DEAD!”
