TSA said it had recovered 6,301 firearms from airport security checkpoints this year through Friday — more than 88% of them were loaded.

That surpasses them previous record of 5,972 firearms detected in 2021.

TSA expects to have intercepted around 6,600 firearms in carry-on baggage by the end of 2022, which would represent a nearly 10% increase from the record level of 2021.

The agency also announced on Friday that it had increased the maximum fine for firearms violations to $14,950 “to reduce the threat of firearms at checkpoints.” Previously, the maximum fine was $13,910.

“I applaud the work of our Transportation Security Officers who are doing an excellent job preventing firearms from entering airport security perimeters and aboard aircraft,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement. “If a passenger brings a firearm to the checkpoint, it consumes significant security resources and poses a potential threat to transportation security, in addition to the high cost to the passenger.”

Firearms or ammunition are not permitted in carry-on baggage at any TSA security checkpoint, even if a passenger has a concealed weapons pass.

TSA regulations allow passengers to carry unloaded firearms in checked baggage. Travelers must comply with state property laws, including reporting their firearms to airline personnel upon check-in.

Firearms found in carry-on baggage will be turned over to local law enforcement. Passengers bringing firearms to a checkpoint could face a fine, with repeated violations leading to higher penalties. Offensive travelers may also be subject to arrest by law enforcement depending on state or local law.

The firearms record comes as the TSA sees traveler volumes increasing back to, if not surpassing, pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels.
