Twitter Furious as Elon Musk rehires editor of neo-Nazi website a day after Kanye West debacle

In a train we only wish was a joke, Elon Musk has restored the Twitter account of Andrew Anglin, owner of neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer.

Anglin’s Twitter account has been suspended for incomprehensible reasons since 2013. Now, just days after rapper Ye, aka Kanye West, touted his love for Hitler on far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ talk show and was subsequently suspended (again) for posting a picture of a swastika in the Star of David, Musk has Anglin’s account revived.

The move has rightfully sparked outrage from Twitter users, who are confused, baffled and utterly demoralized by everything that has happened in the last 24 hours.

Anglin has openly said he believes in ethnic cleansing and authoritarian government. He’s called Hitler “cool,” said women “deserve to be beaten, raped, and locked in cages,” and lives by the mantra WWHD (What Would Hitler Do), according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Anglin’s opinions have even rubbed other racists the wrong way, proving too obvious, too crude, and too provocative even for their liking.

Last month, a Montana judge ordered Anglin to be arrested for dodging a $14 million 2019 judgment, the authorities said Associated Press. The verdict came as a result of an anti-Semitic harassment campaign he orchestrated against a family in Montana in 2017. Anglin has repeatedly sent threatening messages and even shared personal information online, including pictures of her young son.

Unfortunately, Anglin isn’t the first white nationalist Musk has reinstated after the billionaire vowed to grant a “general amnesty” for all suspended accounts.

Anglin’s reinstatement marks a pivotal moment in Twitter’s history, a moment that reflects badly on the company and raises numerous red flags for the future of “free speech” on the platform.

In one of his first tweets since returning to the platform, Anglin said, “I don’t want any trouble.” According to the ADL, he has also said he hopes to “normalize” beliefs of white nationalists like himself. In the same statement, which reads like something out of Hitler’s mouth, Anglin said he hopes we can get to a point where “you can say these things that we believe in public, publicly, without being physically attacked, without your Losing a job without getting kicked off the internet.”

All we have to say is that it’s your turn now, Elon.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, anti-Semitic incidents hit an “all-time high” in 2021, and 2022 is on a similar path. These include assault, harassment and vandalism.
