Zac might be at odds with his pregnant ex, but sisters Star Devale Ellis will always be on Team Karen.
In fact, during a recent chat with TVLine, the actor went into full defense mode about Karen, insisting fans needed to lighten up on the character and her situation. Because while it may feel like Karen has been pregnant for over a year, it’s important to remember that time passes a little differently in the Tyler Perry universe.
“That’s what people need to realize: we exist in a prime-time soap opera that has some comedy, and soap operas are pretty much real-time,” explains Ellis. “If you are observing this hour, you are only observing the time of an hour. So a 20-episode season might only last five or seven days. People say, “She’s three months pregnant,” but it’s only been five days. She hadn’t been pregnant that long.”
When it comes to Karen’s unborn child, who she claims belongs to Zac, Ellis actually believes his character is the father — and not just because the drama makes for good TV.
“As Zac, I want it to be my baby,” he says. “As much as Twitter wants Zac to hate her, he doesn’t. Zac wanted nothing more than to love Karen, but Karen didn’t want to receive his love at that moment. And then when he found love somewhere else, she wanted him. It was heartbreaking for Zac. He still loves Karen to death, so watching her have a baby with someone else would kill him.”
Of course, Ellis is quick to appreciate the other person in this situation – you know, Fatima? Zac’s fiancee? ring a bell?
“He wants it to be his, but at the same time he looks at Fatima and says, ‘It can’t be,'” says Ellis. “Because if that happens, what happens to Fatima?”
