Ukraine will be “sovereign, independent” long after the Putin era: blink

Foreign Minister Antony Blinken said on Sunday that Ukraine will remain independent long after the Putin era of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During an interview with CNN state of the nation At the G7 summit in Germany, host Jake Tapper asked the Secretary of State if he believed Russia would win the war in Ukraine.

“When it comes to Putin’s strategic goals, he has already failed,” Blinken replied. “His strategic goal was to end Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, wipe it off the map, integrate it into Russia. That failed, and a sovereign, independent Ukraine will be around much longer than Vladimir Putin is on the scene.”

He then added: “A tactical, bitter struggle is going on in eastern Ukraine with Russian aggression, with Ukrainian forces pushing back, and that line has shifted. There are wins in one way, wins in another way, but what’s really important is the strategic assertion that what he set out to achieve will not be achieved by Putin.”

Earlier Sunday, Russian rockets hit an apartment building and a kindergarten in Kyiv, killing at least one person, according to Andriy Yermak, head of the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to Ukrainian police chief Ihor Klymenko, five other people were injured in the attack.

“The Russians hit Kyiv again. Rockets damaged an apartment building and a kindergarten. Russia should be declared a state sponsor of terrorism as soon as possible,” Yermak wrote on Twitter, adding that Ukraine “urgently needs modern missile defense systems.”

Blinken pledged that the G7 and NATO “will continue to do everything we can together to ensure Ukrainians have what they need to deter Russian aggression.”

The foreign minister also said the rocket attacks had “no other purpose than trying to terrorize Ukrainians”. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Sunday the attacks show the importance of uniting in support of Ukraine, the Associated Press reported.

“We can say that for sure [Russian President Vladimir] Putin did not expect this and it is still a headache for him – the great international support for Ukraine, but also, of course, the courage and bravery of the Ukrainians to defend their own country,” added the Chancellor after hosting the first meeting of the G7 added summit .

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Sunday warned of “Ukraine fatigue” and called on the United States to “remain committed to peace, freedom and democracy”.

Tapper continued to question Johnson during an interview state of the nationhow the West “can combat Ukraine fatigue at a time when so many Western nations are struggling with real problems at home? the United States to say, ‘You know what, it’s not worth it.’”

“But it is,” the prime minister replied, adding that the world consequences would be “absolutely catastrophic” if Putin succeeded in invading Ukraine and “takes significant parts of a free, independent, sovereign country, what he is ready to do.”

Johnson visited Kyiv earlier this month and recently said he would advocate continued military support for Ukraine at the G7 summit.

“As far as the Ukrainians are able to launch a counter-offensive, it should be supported. With equipment they ask us to do,” Johnson said, according to Reuters.
