about the studios of the 20th century

The horror genre has seen its fair share of peaks and troughs throughout its history, but 2022 was undoubtedly an absolute mountain range, by Jordan Peele nope a third triumphant nod in as many directorial endeavors to Ti West that takes him to new heights X and pearland A24 continues to capitalize on such excitements with the likes of body body body.

But it’s Zach Cregger’s solo directorial debut in barbarian who can lay claim to the peaks of peaks; With the film’s hilarious script, masterful twists, and intriguing commentary on gender and the way it plays with the dichotomies of domination, Cregger can still pat himself on the back years after this film.

Starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long, the film follows the fateful turmoil of three different visitors to an Airbnb whose permanent resident has a terribly twisted history.

Long, in particular, who has recently been heralded as the secret ingredient in a good horror film, found himself anti-typing with his portrayal of AJ Gilbride, a wealthy television star whose density is only slightly eclipsed by his status as a graduate student-an asshole. In an interview with Movieweb, the actor shared how he quickly fell in love with Cregger’s script.

“I had never read a screenplay that seemed so against the rules of screenwriting. I found it so daring and so naturally written. The dialogue just seemed to flow. I was so busy when I first read it and it’s so rare that I get scripts like this I guess for any actor. And for that alone, I remember being really impressed.”

He would recall how that love only grew as he began to piece together what his contribution to the film would entail.

“I thought it was a mistake that he wanted me to play the rom-com guy who dies young and then Bill Skarsgard would play more of the character role. And I was so relieved to realize that we were being asked to do things that none of us seem to have as many opportunities to do as Bill sure did. So it was a real blessing.”

barbarian is now available to stream on HBO Max in the United States and on Disney Plus as part of the streamer’s Star Content Hub in international territories.
